If you're looking for…

A tutor online
You want to be able to do sessions anywhere in Texas with your student on a laptop. Red Comet covers math, reading, and dyslexia from about $30, names TEFA and Odyssey, and states its tutors are certified. Fast Lane Learning (Austin and online) and Jyoling (online) both name TEFA and Odyssey too.
Only math
Your kid needs a weekly math tutor. Root + Rise Math in Leander ($332 to $684 a month) is run by a certified teacher and says TEFA. Mathnasium centers in Castle Hills, South Shore, El Paso, and Humble say TEFA too, but ask about the tutor's credential before you book.
Reading and dyslexia
Your kid needs help with reading. Red Comet, Evergrow Language and Literacy (Spring), I Just Want To Read! (Henderson), and Ahava Learning (Houston) all say TEFA and say their tutors are certified.
SAT, ACT, or PSAT prep
Jyoling works online, and The Pierce Institute in Fort Worth names both TEFA and Odyssey.

These aren't the only ones. 466 are on the list and 106 say TEFA; these are the ones that fit each situation and clearly state that their tutors are certified. The full list is on the state's finder, finder.educationfreedom.texas.gov.

Before the first session, ask which credential the tutor holds, confirm the vendor is on the state's list, and order the session through the marketplace. The four steps are below.

How to get to the first session

Four steps that take a few minutes each.

1. Pick from where you are

Every name here says TEFA on its own site. All 466 are on the state's finder, searchable by city.

2. Send this message (copy it)

"Hi. My child is in [grade] and needs help with [subject]. Before we book, I have two questions. Which credential does the tutor hold: a teaching license, a degree, or a certification such as Orton-Gillingham? And is the session billed through the Odyssey marketplace?"

3. Check the credential

  1. For a Texas teaching certificate, use TEA's Educator Certification Lookup at tea.texas.gov and search the tutor's full name.
  2. For a degree or another certification, ask for a copy, and save it or a screenshot for your records.

4. Order through the marketplace, not the vendor

  1. In Odyssey, search the vendor's exact name and open the session listing.
  2. Check that it's the session you agreed on, with the right subject, length, and price, then order.
Three checks before you order:
1. The tutor holds a credential the state accepts. If not, ask the vendor for one who does.
2. The listing is approved in the marketplace. If it isn't yet, the vendor fixes that.
3. You order through Odyssey. A payment made to the vendor directly can't be reversed.
