Home / Guides / Music, sports and instruments with TEFA

You can pay for piano lessons and the piano with your TEFA voucher.

Instruments, lessons, and sports training are all approved. What usually confuses families is the $1,200 instrument limit and the difference between a coach on the list and gear from the store.

The counts in this guide are from the date in its sources. The finder is refreshed weekly from the state's list, checked October 26, 2026.

What TEFA pays for

✓Music lessons from a vendor on the list
✗An instrument over $1,200
✓Sports and PE instruction from a coach or program on the list
✗Sporting goods from a store, in most cases. Some parents couldn't find footballs, baseball gear, or archery equipment in the marketplace.

If you're looking for…

Piano lessons
Your TEFA voucher pays for lessons from a teacher on the state's list. These three already say TEFA on their sites: Allegro Piano Studio ($50 to $325 a month, names Odyssey too), Octave Games Music Lessons (about $40), and Dallas Piano Academy ($40).
Orchestra, band, or choir
Your kid wants to play with other kids. Denton Homeschool Orchestra ($10 to $350 a month), New Song School of the Arts ($157 to $314), and Zuniga School of Music ($156 to $312 a month) all say TEFA on their sites.
Lessons online, anywhere in Texas
No teacher nearby. Moosiko teaches guitar, ukulele, and piano for $150 to $599 a year and sells the instrument with the lessons, approved by the marketplace. 88 Blue Virtual Academy ($81 to $650 a class) says TEFA.
The keyboard or guitar itself
Your TEFA voucher buys it, up to $1,200 per instrument, from a store on the list such as Brook Mays Music or Tarpley Music, or as part of a lessons-plus-instrument bundle from the teachers above.

These aren't the only ones, just the ones that already say TEFA or Odyssey on their sites. The rest of the 62 are on the state's finder.

Two checks before you pay for a season

  1. Is it on the state's list under this exact name? Search the finder first.
  2. Is the instrument $1,200 or less, and is it sold alone or only with lessons? Ask before you order.
Before you pay, ask: "Is this exact product approved for TEFA?" Then order through the marketplace, not the vendor's own checkout.

Getting the first lesson

Sports work a little differently, and that's at the bottom.

2. The instrument must be at or under $1,200

  1. The cap is $1,200 per instrument. A $990 keyboard is in, and a $1,300 one is out.
  2. You may have to order it with the lessons. Some only list the instrument inside a lessons bundle.

3. Order through the marketplace

  1. In Odyssey, search the vendor's exact name and open the lessons listing, or the bundle if there is one.
  2. Order in Odyssey, not on the studio's site. TEFA pays the studio directly and will not pay you back.

4. Sports

Coaching and training from a listed vendor is payable, such as The Athletic Collegiate and the vendors tagged Enrichment, mostly in DFW and Houston. Gear from a store mostly isn't in the marketplace at all. Parents who went looking for footballs, cleats, and archery equipment didn't find them. Search the finder by "sports" and your city before you plan the season.

Recap: how to order an instrument so it goes through:
1. Keep it at or under the cap. The limit is $1,200 per instrument, and anything above it isn't approved.
2. Check whether it's sold alone. Some vendors got the instrument approved only as part of a lessons bundle, so on its own it isn't in the marketplace.
In short: lessons and instrument together, with the instrument at or under $1,200.
